Heat Treatment of 4140: Unlocking Steel Strength and Durability

When you need steel, you need to make sure it’s as tough and durable as possible. While steel itself is already pretty resilient, different grades and variations can make a huge difference in its practical applications.

But why does heat treatment make such a huge difference, and how does it work? Let’s break down the basics of heat treating 4140 steel and how it can benefit your business. 

What is 4140 Steel?

4140 steel is a type of low-alloy steel that has been combined with other elements to make it harder and more corrosion-resistant. The breakdown of 4140 steel is as follows: 

  • Carbon – 0.38 to 0.43 percent
  • Manganese – 0.75 to 1.00 percent
  • Silicon – 0.15 to 0.35 percent
  • Phosphorous – No more than 0.35 percent
  • Sulfur – No more than 0.40 percent
  • Chromium – 0.80 to 1.10 percent
  • Molybdenum – 0.15 to 0.25 percent

Each of these heat-treated 4140 steel properties has a specific purpose. Carbon helps increase the hardness of the material. Manganese improves the wear resistance. Silicon helps with de-oxidation (rust prevention), and phosphorous makes the material easier to machine. Sulfur improves corrosion resistance, and chromium makes the material harder for penetrating (e.g., punching, boring, or drilling). Finally, molybdenum makes the metal more stable at higher temperatures. 

4140 steel was first created in the 1920s, and it has been a valuable part of many different industries since then. Because of its chemical composition, 4140 steel is highly versatile and can be used to produce various equipment parts. 

How Does Heat Treatment Improve the Strength and Durability of Steel?

Although steel by itself is strong and resilient, heating it can unlock its true potential. Many metals undergo heat treatment to create a tougher microstructure within the material. 

The 4140 steel heat-treatment process works like this: metal sheets are heated to a specific temperature, typically between 1450 and 1700 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the results desired. 

For example, you can heat treat 4140 steel to make it softer and more malleable for machining. In this case, you’d heat it between 1450 and 1600 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour, and then let it cool in the furnace by itself. 

Alternatively, to improve strength and toughness, 4140 steel must be heated between 1550 and 1600 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 30 minutes per inch of thickness. Then, the steel must be quenched in mineral oil immediately. 

Finally, if you’re using 4140 steel for mechanical elements, you can “normalize” it by heating it to between 1600 and 1700 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 30 minutes, then letting it air cool outside the furnace. 

Common Applications of Heat-Treated 4140 Steel

Heat-treated 4140 is perfect for drill collars, pipes, and stabilizers because it can withstand the brutal elements of the job without buckling, cracking, or bending. It also works well for drill bits, crushers, and conveyor rolls. 

Since 4140 heat treated steel is tough and durable, it can be deployed on job sites throughout the world. Dirt, mud, and other elements won’t cause the metal components to rust or break down as quickly over time compared to mild steels. 

Construction Equipment

Although heat-treated 4140 steel is not used for building, it does work well for construction machinery and equipment. Typically, this steel is deployed for excavator teeth, crane booms, bucket pins and other metallic components. Again, its corrosion resistance means it can be used in dirty, grimy, and wet environments without excessive rusting. Plus, it can withstand scraping, digging, and earth moving without losing its durability and toughness. 

Agriculture

Farms and agricultural businesses need steel that can maintain a sharp edge and withstand the heavy abrasion of cutting and plowing. So, many agricultural machines and equipment use heat-treated 4140 steel for these components. Farms can cultivate massive crops without fear of parts breaking down or getting rusted.
